The death has been announced of Kurt Westergaard, the Danish caricaturist who created a furore in the Islamic world after he drew the prophet Mohammed wearing a turban with a bomb in it.
The family said that he died after a long illness, aged 86.
His caricature was published on Jyllands-Posten in 2006 and led to embassies in the country protesting with the Danish Government.
The caricature of the Mohammed is considered an insult to Muslims in general.
In various Muslim countries, large protests had taken place in which a number of people died.
After the caricature, Westergaard received various death threats and there were also attempts on his life.
He went into hiding and afterwards decided to live in a house with a bodyguard always with him.
Two years after the caricature was published, the Danish Police arrested three people suspected of planning to kill him.
In 2011, a Somalian aged 28 was found guilty of trying to kill him and was sentenced to nine years in jail.
In an interview with Reuters in 2008, Westergaard said that he never felt remorse for drawing the caricature.
