Prime Minister Joseph Muscat nominated George Vella to serve as the new President of Malta. On Twitter, Muscat announced that he submitted the nomination for Vella after constitutional consultations.
In a statement, the Prime Minister said the Cabinet today unanimously approved his proposal for Dr George Vella to be named as the tenth President of the Republic of Malta. It was said that at a meeting immediately after, the Government and the parliamentary group unanimously supported this nomination.
According to the Government, Dr George Vella served as Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and as Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Environment between 1996 and 1998. He also served as Minister for Foreign Affairs in the legislature between 2013 and 2017. Doctor Vella was elected to Parliament for the first time in 1978.
Dr Vella was born and lived Zejtun. He married Miriam née Grima. Together they have three children and seven grandchildren.
