It happens to all of us, after lunch we sometimes just want to curl up under our desks and take a quick afternoon nap. Obviously sleeping on the job isn’t usually allowed. But now we have some information that we can bring to our bosses to suggest that nap time could be beneficial to us all.
It turns out that having a nap in the middle of the day is actually good for your health! New research found that having a midday nap, actually reduces blood pressure by the same amount that removing salt from your diet would and also lessens the risk of a heart attack.
A Greek study carried out in a hospital in Voula followed 212 patients who were found to have higher than normal blood pressure. A number of the participants started taking naps after midday. After the study it was found that these people had lower blood pressure than before. Researcher Dr Manolis Kallistratos said, ‘Midday sleep appears to lower blood pressure levels at the same magnitude as other lifestyle changes.’
‘For example, salt and alcohol reduction can bring blood pressure levels down by 3 to 5 mm/Hg. These findings are important because a drop in blood pressure as small as 2 mm/Hg can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack by up to 10 per cent.’
Dr Kallistratos presented the study, ‘Mid-day Sleep Effects as Potent as Recommended Lifestyle Changes in Patients With Arterial Hypertension,’ on Monday, March 18th.
