Have you ever heard of anyone mention how they have been informed that their medical files at Mater Dei got lost? I’ve heard such stories and I was always incredulous… I mean, how can one misplace or loose a medical file? Such important documents,m just gone with the wind?

Yet this week, I had the misfortune of needing to visit Mater Dei… and during my 2 hour wait for someone to call me in for my appointment, amidst yawns, Facebook scrolls, email reading and whatnot… I paced up and down the area I was waiting in and found for myself how some medical files are kept (at least in this department, which am not going to mention)…

I was pretty much unattended for most of the time… and I discovered that some of our files might actually be found in a ‘Dirty Utility’ room! The door was open, files in sight, easy to grab (which I did not). Nobody was attending to these files, and staff wasn’t around much to make sure nobody was showing an intrusive curiosity about the affairs of others; prying for information…. or maybe just plain and simply wanting to create havoc!

I believe that this is not only outrageous but also a breech of the Data Protection Act, am I right? Or am I right? I stand to be corrected, you know… however I doubt any of you will be pleased to know where your files are and how easily they can be accessed by anyone willing to be nosey enough…

Other files were in random consultation rooms which were empty and unattended, where again, should I have wanted to just check a file or steal one, I was perfectly able to…

Well, whilst I thank all of those at Mater Dei who do their work diligently… and whilst I understand that it ain’t the workers’ fault if there is no storage space for medical files… I leave it up to you to decide and discuss whether this is acceptable or not…
