THE INTERVIEW VIDEO
Who is Jessica Magro? How would you describe yourself?
I consider myself to be a very outgoing person, ready to meet new people, learn new things and know what I want from life. I love to travel, when funds are available haha! I am very passionate about my music and singing.
When did you first start singing?
I started singing way back in 2002. I had just started Form 1 and my music teacher chose me to sing a solo song with the Form Choir. She liked my voice and told me to consider starting singing professionally. She even wrote a note on my school dairy to show to my parents. I started my first singing lessons with Ms. Doreen Galea.
What did your family do to encourage you?
When I was younger and still at school, my family supported me in everything – that is, financially, driving me around for singing lessons and local competitions. They are the first ones that come to cheer me on during competitions and during events. They were and still are my backbone and I really appreciate what they have done and still do for me.
Is there anyone else in your family that sings?
I know that my aunts did sing when they were young but did not continue when they grew up. So I am the only one in my family that sings.
Which was the first song you ever sung?
The first song I ever sung was ‘7th Wonder’ in my first ever local competition. This was way back in 2002.
Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition?
Oh yes, so much!!!! It’s like I am going to sing for the very first time every time. However, along the years I have learned how to control it a bit better.
Have you ever won any prizes?
Yes I have. My most renown competition was ‘L-Ghanja tal-Poplu 2017’ where I won with the song ‘Meta r-Ramel jithallat mas-Silg’. The song was composed by Pamela Bezzina and penned by Paul Ellul.
How often and for how long do you practice?
I try to practice at least an hour every day. It depends at what time I arrive at home, haha!.
How do you balance your music with work and social life?
I like to plan my time a lot. So, after work I try to plan everything that has to do with music and singing, and of course the weekends are the days when I get to do most things related to music and singing.
Which famous artists do you admire and why?
Foreign singers: I admire the group ‘Little Mix’. They started from nothing, they weren’t even a group when they started out. However, they kept on going and are one of the strongest group nowadays.
Local singers: I admire Ira Losco. I think she is one of the biggest artists in Malta and she does not let anything stand in her way.
What kind of music do you listen to today?
I listen mostly to Pop music.
What are your favourite songs at present?
Currently my favourite songs are: High Hopes by Panic! at the Disco, 7 Rings by Ariana Grande, Thursday by Jess Glynne, New Day by Red Electrick, Ruin my Life by Zara Larsson and High by Matthew James. These change every week though!
Where would you most like to perform?
I would love to someday perform during the ‘Isle of MTV’ and also maybe on a big stage abroad.
If you had to choose a favourite style of music, which would it be?
My favourite style would have to be Pop genre. But I also like Ballad Songs.
What advice would you give beginner singers?
Start slow. Always start by going to lessons to hone your singing technique. Be humble and accept constructive criticism to continue to grow.
Any loves, other than music?
I love to read, travel and watch TV Series.
What are you working on right now?
I am currently working on my first debut single “Fearless”. The song was written by myself. It will be release on the 13th of March exclusively on Unravel Malta.
What future do you see in front of you now?
“Fearless” is my first original song but surely not the last. I am working on releasing more original songs in the near future and continue working on building my original repertoire.
Golden Question – X Factor on your mind?
I am still not 100% sure if i will apply for season two of X Factor Malta but it is definitely on my mind.
Thank you Jessica. Wishing you the best of luck for your debut single and all your future plans in your musical career.
