If you have a cat, you probably have a pretty good idea if he is happy, angry or frustrated. But do cats actually have common “facial expressions” that accompany these emotions, like humans?
Science has actually studied issues like this for decades (even Charles Darwin did some studies on this), but not always in a rigorous scientific way. A group of scientists decided to create a “facial coding system” for cats, which they called ” CatFACS “, which stands for Cat Facial Action Coding System.
This type of structure can help to link the behaviours and emotions in cats, as well as other related animals. The system is based on the facial anatomy of cats and was adapted from the original FACS system used for the man created by Ekman and Friesen in 1978.
