A 16-year-old boy in Singapore has been charged with the murder of another 13-year-old student. Yesterday, the country was in shock after the Police were informed that the corpse of a 13-year-old boy was found inside a school bathroom.
An axe found in connection with the murder, was, according to the Minister of the Interior, bought by the accused from the internet. From first investigations it emerged that the two boys did not know each other.
Because of the incident River Valley High School went into a lockdown, with students being held in classrooms. They were allowed to leave after the accused was arrested.
This morning, in court, the 16-year-old boy was charged with murder, which could lead to the death penalty. However, as he is underage he is likely to face a life sentence. The Prosecution asked the Court to keep the child in pre-trial detention stating that was a patient in a mental health institution, after he had tried to kill himself in 2019.
This case shocked the country because such violence is very rare in schools. Singapore has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.
