America’s top coronavirus expert has warned Covid-19 is the new normal – and that the killer virus might never go away.

Asked about how life could return to normal without a vaccine, White House immunologist Dr Anthony Fauci said:

‘If back to normal means acting like there never was a coronavirus problem, I don’t think that’s going to happen until we do have a situation where you can completely protect the population. But when we say getting back to normal we mean something very different from what we’re going through right now, because right now we are in a very intense mitigation. When we go back to normal we will go back very gradually to the point where we can function as a society. But you’re absolutely right, if you want to get to pre-coronavirus, that might not ever happen in the sense that, the fact that the threat is there.’

And Dr Fauci, also sounded a note of hope about the world’s future prospects. He explained:

‘I believe with the therapies that will be coming online and with the fact that I feel confident that over a period of time we will get a good vaccine that we never have to get back to where we are right back now.’

The number of people known to be infected by coronavirus soared to almost 380,000 on Tuesday morning, with close to 11,000 killed by Covid-19. Scientists around the world are frantically working on a Covid-19 vaccine, but warn it is likely to be at least 12 to 18 months before any successful shot becomes widely available.
