It will be possible to burn some tumors in a second thanks to the use of electron beams generated by laser.

This is what was discovered by a scientist from Bari, Gabriele Grittani, who works in the Eli-Beamlines research center in Dolni Brezany, a few kilometers from Prague. Grittani, a young nuclear physicist, has patented the new system that promises greater effectiveness in the fight against cancer, particularly in the treatment of lung and prostate cancer.

“It is underway”, explains Grittani, “the realisation of an indispensable prototype to start the experimental phase of a radiotherapy that represents a historical turning point in the field of tumors.

The advantages of this discovery are many. Electrons are faster and lighter than the protons used today. Therefore, a therapy based on electrons is certainly faster, it is less invasive and more economical. Moreover, thanks to the laser technology, the machinery allows the real-time monitoring of the tumor position, which involves a greater control over the patient’s therapy”.

Grittani, born in Bari, graduated from Pisa, then moved to Prague for a research doctorate and now works in the research center, developing new technologies based on laserplasma.
