The expected typhoon Kammuri hit the ground during the night in southeast Manila, causing considerable damage but, at least for the moment, no injured or victim.

The typhoon, in view of which yesterday the Philippine authorities had ordered the evacuation of over 100,000 people , hit the city of Gubat (in the province of Sorsogon) with winds of a maximum speed of 235 kilometers per hour and is now heading westward through the province of Quezon. The Kammuri force destroyed many houses, shot down light poles, damaged Legazpi airport in the province of Albay and caused flooding in numerous coastal villages. The authorities have closed Manila airport, which should reopen in the late afternoon.
