The ban on abortion at the first heartbeat of the fetus was also voted in Louisiana, after the law came into force a few days ago in Alabama.

Democratic Representative from Georgia Lucy McBath (R) joins other legislators to introduce the Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA), federal legislation to guarantee equal access to abortion in the United States, at the Capitol in Washington, DC, USA, 23 May 2019. In the wake of several states' restrictive abortion bans, the WHPA would guarantee a woman's right to an abortion and the right of an abortion provider to deliver services. EPA/ERIK S. LESSER

The provision does not provide for exceptions, not even in the case of rape or incest. The doctors who will interrupt the pregnancy will commit a crime risking up to two years in prison. The law is now ready to be signed by Democratic governor John Bel Edwards.
