An explosion occurred at dawn in a two-story building in Portoferraio, on the Island of Elba. The explosion, caused by a gas leak, resulted in the collapse of the building located in Via De Nicola. Firefighters intervened just before five.
At the moment there are five people being searched for, belonging to two different families. Three people have already been extracted alive: they are from a family in Portoferraio. A fourth person was found lifeless. He is a 68-year-old man, a native of the island but who today resided in the Livornese and during these days he was on Elba on vacation with his wife. She, a 76-year-old woman, is still missing at the moment. The spouses are the owners of the building in which the explosion occurred.
Teams from Piombino and Follonica are also on the spot, as well as the Usar Light operational sections by the Commands of Massa Carrara, Lucca, Pisa, Florence, Prato and Pistoia and 4 canine units. The flight departments of the Cecina and Arezzo fire departments are being activated. The mayor of Portoferraio, Angelo Zini, also arrived at the crash site. Firefighters are proceeding with great caution because there is a risk of new explosions.
