A video clip doing the rounds shows a mother throwing down her daughter from a building on fire during riots in the Durban district of South Africa.
Over 70 persons have been killed in the violence after former President Jacob Zuma was sent to prison. Zuma was found guilty of contempt of court last month after failing to turn up for an inquiry on corruption during his presidency. He gave himself up to the police authorities on Wednesday and is now serving a 15-month sentence. This has led to violent protests and the torching of buildings.
Crowds of people yesterday set fire to several outlets and apartments. A woman and her toddler were in one of the apartments. She is seen in the video throwing down her daughter in the hope of saving her. The video also shows several persons trying to catch the baby. Luckily the woman was also rescued and was later reunited with her baby.
Over 1,200 persons have been arrested so far in connection with the riots. South African Police have identified some 12 persons suspected of provoking the riots.
