WATCH: Volcano erupts in New Zealand, at least one dead, fear for others
At least one person died, but the authorities fear that the number may be much higher, in the eruption of the Whakaari / White Island volcano, a popular tourist island in New Zealand.
According to the authorities, at the time of the eruption about a hundred people were near the crater for a visit. For the moment, the authorities have made it known, “it is too dangerous for rescuers to approach the island”.
The New Zealand premier, Jacinda Ardern, confirmed that several tourists involved are foreigners: “We know that there were many tourists both on the island and in the vicinity – he explained – Some are New Zealanders, but many others are foreigners”.
The wounded were transported to the beach and medicated on site, waiting for rescuers to approach and transfer them to the mainland.
My god, White Island volcano in New Zealand erupted today for first time since 2001. My family and I had gotten off it 20 minutes before, were waiting at our boat about to leave when we saw it. Boat ride home tending to people our boat rescued was indescribable. #whiteislandpic.twitter.com/QJwWi12Tvt
