A 40-year-old woman who lives in Sliema was sentenced to eight months in jail and fined €2,000 after she was found guilty of trying to smuggle drugs into prison.
Graziella Francalanza was charged by Inspector Malcolm Bondin that on 5 November, and the weeks prior to that, she was trafficking and was in possession of heroin as well as of trying to smuggle the drug into the Corradino Correctional Facility.
The Police began investigating this case after they received information that Francalanza was going to try and pass drugs on to a prisoner on the day he was to appear in Court.
As soon as the Police saw her entering Court, they arrested her and took her to the Valletta police station where a search was carried out. She herself then gave them the packet of drugs which was hidden in her bra.
From analysis it resulted that the amount of drugs was 0.81 grams which was 32% pure.
Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras, who presided over the case, heard how 11 hours of telephone calls had been recorded in which the prisoner for whom the drugs were intended, was heard speaking.
He is heard naming the accused and saying that some “things” had to be passed on to him although the Magistrate herself noted that he was very cautious in the way he spoke.
From the evidence, it also resulted that two weeks prior to the case the same accused had passed something on to the prisoner when she kissed him when she and another woman had gone to visit him.
When handing down the sentence, the Magistrate noted that the accused had already been found guilty of possession of ecstasy while also taking into consideration that she was a drug addict.
She therefore found her guilty of the charges brought against her and sentenced her to 8 months in jail, and a fine which can be paid in instalments of €100 per month.
